Buttermilk lived in a shelter for over 5 years. Read her story below.
Buttermilk came to BCAS in August of 2017 at 3 months old. She was very standoffish and did not enjoy human company at all. She was ok with hanging out with the other cats in the large playroom but if a stranger came in to meet kitties she would just hide.
In March of 2023, BCAS began a program to help get long term cats adopted. Robin, an approved adopter, came to the shelter and met Buttermilk. Buttermilk was very timid and was just not the cat that Robin was looking for. Buttermilk was everything on her “NO” list according to Robin. Robin was leery to adopt Buttermilk because of her age and that she was not going to be able to declaw her. Robin left the shelter without Buttermilk.
Robin was still considering getting a pet and after taking some time to think about it, Robin came back to the shelter and took Buttermilk home on a foster-to-adopt status certain that this cat was not going to be “the one”.
As the days went by Buttermilk found 3 hiding spots where she would spend her time. She liked to be in closets and/or under the bed. Robin would spend time on the floor coaxing Buttermilk to come to her so she could show her love. This went on for 6 weeks. Robin’s friends and family didn’t think it was going to work out and Robin was also skeptical.
Then all of a sudden, she trusted me!” stated Robin. After 6 weeks Buttermilk would begin to come out of the closet if Robin was up and about. Robin also says that “Buttermilk is the most loving, cuddling, precious little girl. She needed to go slowly, and I did too with the passing of my baby boy Sammy. It was a perfect fit. I am so happy I can give her the forever home that she so deserves. Breaks my heart she was a shelter for so long. And to think, she was everything on my NO list and now I just adore her!”
Please consider adopting a long-term shelter cat today. We understand the allure of all those cute and cuddly kittens that are available right now but remember these long-term shelter kitties were also kittens once and somehow got overlooked and missed their chance at being adopted into a loving home. Buttermilk lived the shelter life for over 5 years. Let’s get her other long-term friends adopted and with loving families.
