The cost that BCAS pays to have an animal spayed/neutered has went up dramatically over the years. If we want to continue helping homeless pets then we can not continue to absorb this cost. 99.8% of the animals we intake need altered and it is required by state law before adopting out.
Being a No Kill/Low Kill shelter, many pets have a long stay. Providing for pets long term while they wait for their special families costs money, lots of money. That is why we depend on adoption fees and donations so heavily.
Anyone with a pet knows the true expense of food, litter, medications, vet visits, etc. Our shelter uses roughly 350-400 lbs of litter per week! Adoption fees alone does not cover this cost. We rely on donations to help with this.
Our annual intake of pets are posted on our website. The more animals we take in, the more staff we need to provide care. Employees, insurance, electricity, fuel for dispatch calls and vehicle and building maintenance all have associated costs that are not fixed.
